Making Cappuccino with an Espresso Machine

So you want to make cappuccino but you don't have a cappuccino maker? Here's how to make a lovely cappuccino by using your existing espresso machine.

Fortunately pretty much all espresso machines that are on the market can be used to make the frothy milk that is required in a cappuccino.

The first step that you'll need to take is to make the espresso first, just exactly as you would do normally.

Next, turn on the steam pipe and allow any residual water to flow out. Now, take a small jug or cup and put some semi-skimmed milk in it. Make sure that you don't over-fill the container though - one-third full is plenty. Next, switch your machine to its cappuccino setting and put the steam pipe into your jug or cup of milk.

When you turn the steam pipe on you'll need to allow the steam to blow onto the surface of the milk. If you gently move the jug up or down then you'll start to get the required air into the milk (building the frothy texture that you need). Ensure that you do not allow the milk to boil. You should stop when you start to hear a high-pitched whining noise.

All that's left to do is to pour the hot milk on top of the espresso and then spoon the froth on top. A perfect cappuccino, just like they make in Italy!
